RESEARCH OFFICER – ‘THE GLOBAL GOVERNED?’: REFUGEES AS PROVIDERS OF PROTECTION AND ASSISTANCE

The Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) seeks a full-time qualitative Research Officer (with background in Anthropology, Sociology, or Development Studies) to work as part of an inter-disciplinary research team. The Research Officer must have extensive qualitative fieldwork experience and be comfortable being based in East Africa for an extended period of time, with fieldwork undertaken over two 5-month periods. The post is tenable until 30 September 2018, and is to start as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Anthropology, Sociology, or Development Studies; significant experience of independent research in developing countries, with a focus on Africa (preferably East Africa); proven ability to conduct and coordinate ethnography, focus group discussions, and in-depth qualitative interviews in challenging field locations; a track record of publishing excellent research in their subject area; proven ability to work in an inter-disciplinary team and engage in collaborative research; and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Experience in oral history and documentary filmmaking and fluency/strong proficiency in Somali, Arabic, French and/or Kiswahili is highly preferred.

DEPARTMENTAL LECTURER IN FORCED MIGRATION

Oxford Department of International Development, Queen Elizabeth House, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £31,076 – £38,183 p.a.

The Oxford Department of International Development seeks applications for a full-time Departmental Lectureship in Forced Migration. The postholder will be responsible to the Head of Department, Professor Christopher Adam. The post is tenable for 1 year from 1 September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will cover the teaching of Professor Alex Betts during his sabbatical leave. The postholder will teach both core and optional courses on the MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies and on the MPhil in Development Studies. S/he will form part of the core academic staff of the Refugee Studies Centre (RSC), a constituent element of the Department of International Development, and the leading academic centre in the UK and Europe on refugee and forced migration issues.

Applicants should have: a doctorate in the social sciences ideally with a focus on forced migration, completed or due to be submitted before the start of appointment, as well as strong knowledge of qualitative methods with particular relevance to forced migration and the ability to convene and make a substantial contribution to the Research Methods course on the MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies. The experience and ability to take sole responsibility for teaching two options courses on the MSc in Refugee and Forced Migration, including one regional option course and proven ability and experience necessary to teach high-achieving and challenging graduate students, in a multi-disciplinary environment and to carry out student assessment, examination and course design is also essential. The successful applicant will also have an active research record in the field of forced migration or cognate areas; an academic publication record commensurate with stage of career; the ability to present research findings effectively to fellow professionals or other informed members of the public; and the ability to contribute effectively to the administrative work of the department and work effectively with colleagues as part of an interdisciplinary team.
