Global Compact for Migration – Ressources

The global compact for migration will be the first, inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner.

In the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, adopted in September 2016, the General Assembly decided to develop a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The process to develop this global compact for migration started in April 2017. The General Assembly will then hold an intergovernmental conference on international migration in 2018 with a view to adopting the global compact.

The global compact is a significant opportunity to improve the governance on migration, to address the challenges associated with today’s migration, and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and migration to sustainable development.

NEGOTIATION PHASE (January – July 2018)

The intergovernmental negotiations on the global compact for migration are being held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. More information is available here.

STOCKTAKING PHASE (November – December 2017)

The stocktaking phase will assess the inputs received during the consultation phase. During this phase a preparatory meeting will be held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and the Secretary-General will present a report to provide Member States with recommendations before the beginning of the intergovernmental negotiations. More information is available here.

CONSULTATION PHASE (April – November 2017)

A series of informal thematic sessions, regional consultations and stakeholder consultations were held between April and November 2017 to gather substantive input and concrete recommendations to inform the development of the global compact on migration. You can find more information about each of these sessions and download relevant statements and background documents at:
